Installing on a USB Flash Drive

You can install Citavi directly on a USB flash drive. The advantage is that you can then use Citavi on any computer that meets the system­ requirements and already has .NET Framework 4.5.1 (or later) installed. To start Citavi, double-click the "Swiss Academic Software\Citavi 5 Program\bin\Citavi.exe" file.

Installing Citavi on a USB flash drive only

If you have not already installed Citavi on your computer:

  1. Ensure that your USB flash drive has enough free space. The program files require about 250 MB; you should have enough room for your projects and files, too.
  2. Double-click Citavi5Setup.exe to begin the installation.
  3. The Setup Assistant takes you through the installation.
  4. When given the option to select the installation destination, choose the USB flash drive.
  5. Wait until "Citavi was successfully installed" appears.
  6. You can now delete the Citavi5Setup.exe file or save it for installation on other computers.

Please note:

If you only install Citavi on a USB flash drive, you will not be able to work with the Word Add-In. The Pickers can also not be installed on a USB flash drive.

Installing Citavi on a Computer and then on a USB Flash Drive

If you have already installed Citavi on your computer:

  1. Ensure that your USB flash drive has enough free space. The program files require about 250 MB; you should have enough room for your projects and files, too.
  2. Start Citavi from your computer and open a project.
  3. On the Help menu, click Install Citavi on a USB flash drive.
  4. The Setup Assistant takes you through the installation.
  5. When given the option to select the installation destination, choose the USB flash drive.
  6. Wait until "Citavi was successfully installed" appears.

The Citavi Setup is MSI-based, so it can be run on your computer only one time. If you try to run the setup again, a repair program will start. This is the reason that there is a special procedure for a second installation. You can also follow the steps below if you first installed Citavi on a USB flash drive and now want to install it on your computer.

Installing Citavi on a USB Flash Drive and then on a Computer

It is not possible to install Citavi on a computer if it's the same computer that you used to install Citavi on the USB flash drive. First, uninstall Citavi from the Windows Control Panel, then install Citavi on the PC. After that follow the steps under "Installing Citavi on a computer and then on a USB flash drive".

Please note:

Installation takes longer on a USB flash drive than on a computer, and the Pickers cannot be used on USB flash drives.
To start Citavi from your USB flash drive, open the folder Swiss Academic Software\Citavi 5 Program\bin and double-click the file Citavi.exe.
During installation, the folder Swiss Academic Software\Citavi 5 Program is created. This folder contains the Citavi program files. Once you start your first project, Citavi will create the folder Projects in the folder Citavi 5. Here you will find your project files.
Note that existing projects saved on your computer are not automatically saved on the USB flash drive as well. If you would like to save a project originally saved on your computer on the USB flash drive, copy or move it to the folder Citavi 5\Projects.
