Types of Bibliographies

There are three basic types of bibliographies:

When you write a paper, you almost always create a list of the sources referred to in the paper. This list may be called a bibliography, a list of works cited, or a reference list, but all of these terms refer to the same thing. The citation style you use determines what information is included in the bibliography, how entries are sorted, and what the formatting should look like.

Sometimes you may just want to create a simple list with bibliographic entries that's not connected to a paper. For example, you might want to create a reading list for a presentation. In Citavi, this is known as a Project Bibliography and can be created independently of a publication.

You may also come across comprehensive stand-alone bibliographies on a particular topic. These bibliographies are often book-length publications and they usually attempt to list all works on a particular topic, by a particular author, or with another shared characteristic.
