Changing the Bibliography's Sort Order
Under File > Citation Style Properties > Bibliography > Sorting you can choose how the references in your bibliography should be sorted.
Alphabetic sorting always occurs within one alphabet only. It is not possible to create a sorting that mixes different alphabets (Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, Cyrillic, Latin, etc.). For example, in a bibliography references using the Latin alphabet will appear before references in Cyrillic.
Author, year, title
The bibliography is sorted alphanumerically by the last name of the author. If the author published multiple references, the older references will appear before the newer references. If a reference does not have an author, editor, or organization, the title and the publication year are used for the sorting.
Hint
Under Lists > Persons and organizations, you can tell Citavi which part of a name to sort by. For example, if you have an author named Anna van Utrecht, you can tell Citavi to use Utrecht as the Sort by name by entering Utrecht in the Sort by field. You can also use this feature to output mixed-alphabetical sortings. For example, in the Author field, enter Достоевский, Фёдор Михайлович. In the Sort by field, enter Dostojewski, Fjodor Michailowitsch.
First author, year, title
The bibliography is sorted alphanumerically by the last name of the first author. Additional authors are disregarded. If the author or group of authors published multiple references, the older references will appear before the newer references.
American Psychological Association (APA)
The bibliography is sorted alphanumerically and then by year, but additional sorting criteria are also applied:
▪Works with one author appear before works with multiple authors.
▪Works by the same author or group of authors in the same year are sorted alphabetically by title not taking into account any initial articles (a, an, the) that are present. Works that appear as parts in a series are sorted by their part number and not alphabetically.
▪Works by the same first author with different co-authors are sorted by the name of the first co-author. If these names are identlical, the second co-author is used, etc.
In the order cited
This sorting method is only used in reference number styles. The sorting order in the bibliography is determined by the order in which references appear in the document.
Field selection
You can select the fields Citavi should sort by.
Programmed (for experts)
The Citavi support team has a number of scripts with special sorting methods, including some that exclude certain reference types from the bibliography (for example, court decisions, statutes or regulations, or contributions in legal commentaries). However, you can also use the Group bibliography feature to get the same result.
Please note:
These sorting methods are not applied if you create a project bibliography by clicking File > Print or save project bibliography. Instead, the references will use the sort order you defined in Citavi.
