Importing from EBSCO databases

You can search EBSCO® databases from within Citavi. When searching using EBSCO's online portal, here's how you can import results:

  1. Perform your search in the EBSCO database of your choice.
  2. Select the check box next to each result you want to import. To save results across sessions, sign in to MyEBSCO and add them to a project first.
  3. In the toolbar above the results list, click Export results. To export a single open record, click Cite, then Export in RIS format.
  4. Choose how many results to export: 1-50, 500, or Up to 25,000.
  5. Select RIS as the export format (for CITAVI, EndNote, Zotero, Mendeley, and similar programs).
  6. For up to 50 results, your browser downloads the RIS file directly. For larger sets, enter your email address and click Send; EBSCO emails you a download link (valid for seven days).
  7. Open (double-click) the downloaded RIS file.
  8. The references are imported into the project that is currently open. If Citavi is not open, it will start and ask which project you want to import the references into.
  9. The first time you import, Citavi will ask you to check the encoding (i.e. whether characters are displaying correctly) and to change the encoding if necessary. Click Next.
  10. The first time you import, Citavi will ask you to check that author names are in the correct order and to change the order if necessary. Click Next. The import starts. Click Add to project.

Please note:

EBSCOhost automatically removes duplicate results when exporting to RIS, so the number of references imported into Citavi may be smaller than the number of search hits—especially when you search several EBSCO databases at once.
