Importing from Zotero (via API)

Starting with Citavi 7.3, you can import references, file attachments, and annotations directly from your Zotero account. Citavi connects to Zotero using your Zotero User ID and a personal API key.

Important:

The files you want to import must be stored in the Zotero Cloud. You need to be logged in to your Zotero account to create an API key.

Get your Zotero User ID and API key

  1. Log in to your Zotero account and open zotero.org/settings/keys.
  2. Note your User ID, which is shown at the top of the page.
  3. Click Create new private key.
  4. Enter a name for the key and grant read access to your library, notes, and files.
  5. Click Save Key and copy the key immediately — it is only shown once. Store it in a safe place.

Import your Zotero library into Citavi

  1. Open the Citavi project you want to import your references into.
  2. On the File menu, click Import.
  3. Select Another reference management program. Click Next.
  4. Select Zotero (via API). Click Next.
  5. Enter your User ID and API Key.
  6. Choose whether to Download file attachments and Import annotations (both are selected by default).
  7. Click Validate. Once the status changes to validated, click OK.
  8. In the import window, select the references you want to import and click Add to project.

Please note:

Standalone notes (notes that are not attached to a reference) are not imported. Only the following attachment types are imported: PDF files, images (PNG, JPG, GIF, BMP, TIFF), plain text files, and web links.
