Tips for names of persons
Most names consist of a first name and a last name, and are therefore easy to add. Things become complicated when you want to record a title of nobility or a name affix. For example, how do you enter a name like Liselotte von der Pfalz?
The fundamental principle is that names should be entered as the individuals themselves use them.
- Special Guidelines for Multiple Last Names
- Exceptions: Biblical Names, Names of Popes and Clerical Dignitaries, etc.
- Don't Add Academic Titles or Titles of Nobility
- Defining the "Sort By" Name
The Editor allows you to edit complex names by entering each component of the name separately: first name, last name, middle name, prefix, suffix, and (for institutions only) abbreviation. To access the editor, click on a name and select Edit.
