Exporting to BibTeX

You need a BibTeX file to create publications with TeX. You can also use BibTeX files to share bibliographic information with users of other reference management programs.

Exporting to BibTeX

  1. In the Reference Editor on the File menu, click Export.
  2. Choose which references to export, then click Next.
  3. Select BibTeX, then click Next.
  4. Choose whether you want to copy the BibTeX data to the Clipboard or if you want to save it as a text file. If you choose Save to text file, click Browse, enter a name and location for the file, and click Save.
  5. If you want, select additional BibTeX export options.
  6. If you want, select the option to only export references cited in a specific TeX document.
  7. Click Next. Choose whether you want to save the export preset for future exports, then click Next.

By default, Citavi exports the contents of any field that is defined as required or optional for the reference type in BibTeX. You can customize the BibTeX export as needed.

Customizing a BibTeX Export

  1. In the Reference Editor on the File menu, click Export.
  2. Choose which references to export, then click Next.
  3. Click BibTeX and then click Next.
  4. Click Edit BibTeX export definition if you want to change the mapping to the BibTeX Entry Types and click Next.
  5. If necessary, change the mapping of BibTeX Fields . For each BibTeX Field you can set whether it is required. Click Next.
  6. Select additional export options and click Next.
  7. Save the export under a name of your choice for later use.
  8. Choose whether you want to copy the BibTeX data to the Clipboard or if you want to save it as a text file. If you choose Save to text file, click Browse, enter a name and location for the file, and click Save.
  9. Once you've saved your export definition you can use it to create an Export template.
