Upgrading from Citavi 6 DBServer to Citavi 7 DBServer

If you want to switch from Citavi 6 for DBServer to Citavi 7 for DBServer, please follow the instructions below:

Important

The database structure has not changed in Citavi 7. Your existing DBServer databases can be used with Citavi 7 without any conversion, and they remain compatible with Citavi 6 during the transition.

To avoid interrupting the work of other users, we recommend the following:

  1. Install Citavi 7 on your users' computers (or on the terminal server) with the desired settings. For more information, see the chapter Using the MSI Assistant.
An important setting is the option to prevent registration in Citavi Account. Citavi Account is necessary for loading licenses for Citavi for Windows (but not for Citavi for DBServer) and for working with cloud projects. If you want to prevent both activities, choose the Disable Citavi Account option.
  2. Ask all users to exit Citavi 6 so that all DBServer projects are closed.
  3. Start the Citavi 7 DBServer Manager and connect to your existing databases. Because the database structure is unchanged, no conversion is required.
  4. Install the Citavi 7 for DBServer licenses and assign per seat licenses to users.
  5. Let your users know that they can continue working with Citavi 7.
  6. Uninstall Citavi 6 on your users' computers.

Are you still using Citavi 5 for DBServer?

If you are still using Citavi 5 for DBServer, the database structure must first be updated, because it changed between Citavi 5 and Citavi 6. The Citavi 7 DBServer Manager converts your Citavi 5 databases directly.

Important

During the upgrade the database structure is updated. The database will then no longer be in the old format and can no longer be edited with Citavi 5. Create a backup of your databases before converting.
If you only want to try out Citavi 7, do not carry out the database conversion in step 3 below. Instead, create a new database for Citavi 7.

To avoid interrupting the work of other users, we recommend the following:

  1. Install Citavi 7 on your users' computers (or on the terminal server) with the desired settings. For more information, see the chapter Using the MSI Assistant.

  2. Ask all users to exit Citavi 5 so that all DBServer projects are closed.
  3. Start the Citavi 7 DBServer Manager.
    1. Scenario 1: The Citavi 7 DBServer Manager finds connection information to Citavi 5 databases in the settings.
When you start the Citavi 7 DBServer Manager a conversion assistant will appear. Confirm each Citavi 5 database that you want to convert.
    2. Scenario 2: The Citavi 7 DBServer Manager finds no connection information to Citavi 5 databases in the settings.
When you start the Citavi 7 DBServer Manager a connection assistant will appear. Create a connection to SQL Server. If you select an existing Citavi 5 database in the connection assistant, the connection assistant will prompt you to convert it to the new format.
  1. Install the Citavi 7 for DBServer licenses and assign per seat licenses to users.
  2. After the conversion is complete, let your users know that they can continue working with Citavi 7.
  3. Uninstall Citavi 5 on your users' computers.
