Read on below for solutions to these common problems:

Important

The Word Add-In cannot be loaded if a Word document is visible in the Preview in Windows Explorer or if you're using a format other than .docx.
Save your Word files in .docx format and not in .odt, .rtf, or .doc format.

Select the solution that applies to your situation:

hmtoggle_plus1 Check if the Word Add-In is installed

  1. Switch to the Windows Control Panel.
  2. Click Uninstall a program.
  3. Select Citavi 6.
  4. Click Change. The Citavi Setup Assistant starts.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Select Modify, and then click Next.
  7. Click the red "X" next to Word Add-In (see screenshot)?***
    this means that the Add-In is not installed → try solution B.
    Is there no red X next to the Word Add-In?
    the Add-In was not loaded because Word was still running in the background when you tried to start Word → try solution A.
    ... or Word disabled the Add-In → try solution C

hmtoggle_plus1 Solution A: End Word Processes Running in the Background

Cause: Since Word was still running in the background the Word Add-In could not be loaded. This can happen if in the Windows File Explorer a Word file was open in the preview.

Solution:

  1. End Word, Outlook, and/or the Preview in Windows Explorer.
  2. Open the Windows Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete.
  3. Search for Microsoft Word. If using Windows 8 or earlier enable the Show processes from all users checkbox. Select the Microsoft Word entry and click End task. If you don't see Microsoft Word in the list, try solution C.
  4. Restart Word.

If the Word Add-In does not appear, try solution C.

hmtoggle_plus1 Solution B: Uninstall Citavi, Repair Office, Reinstall Citavi

Cause: The existing Microsoft Office installation gives Citavi the wrong or incorrect information during the installation. As a result, the Add-In cannot be installed.

Solution:

1. Uninstall Citavi (This will not affect your projects, settings or license key.)

2. Repair your Office installation. This ensures that Citavi can find the correct entries in the Windows Registry when you reinstall it:

Repair Office 365

    1. Switch to the Windows Control Panel.
    2. Click Uninstall a program.
    3. Select Office 365.
    4. Select Online Repair.

Repair Office 2013 or 2010

    1. Switch to the Windows Control Panel.
    2. Click Uninstall a program.
    3. Select Microsoft Office [version number].
    4. Click Change.
    5. Select Repair.
  1. Make sure that Word isn't running.
  2. Install Citavi.

hmtoggle_plus1 Solution C: Enable the Word Add-In

Cause: Word disabled the Citavi Word Add-In.

Solution:

  1. In Word, click File > Options > Add-Ins.
  2. In the Manage dropdown menu, select Disabled Items and click Go to or Go (Word 2016).
  3. Select Citavi Word Add-In [version number] (mscoree.dll) and click Enable.
  4. Close Word.
  5. Restart Word.

Is the Add-In still not visible?

  1. In Word, click File > Options > Add-Ins.
  2. In the Manage dropdown menu, select COM Add-ins and click Go.
  3. Select the CitaviWordAddIn [version number] checkbox and click OK.
  4. Close Word.
  5. Restart Word.
