Tips for Names of Persons
Most names consist of a first name and a last name and are therefore easy to add. Things become complicated when you want to record a title of nobility or a name affix. For example, how do you enter a name like Liselotte von der Pfalz? While the chapters below give you some specific tips, in general, you should record a person's name the same way they use it themselves.
Contents:
- Special Guidelines for Multiple Last Names
- Prefixes
- Exceptions: Biblical Names, Names of Popes and Clerical Dignitaries, Etc.
- Pseudonyms
- Don't Add Academic Titles or Titles of Nobility
- Defining the "Sort By" Name
Hint
Don't enter complicated names directly in a name field. Instead, open the author editor by placing the insertion point in a name field and press F9. You can then enter each part of the name in the corresponding field: First name, Last name, Middle name(s), Prefix, Suffix. For institutions you can also enter an abbreviation.
