What's changed in Citavi 6?
The following features are no longer part of Citavi, either because they were technically obsolete or did not work with the new cloud features.
For license administrators: per-seat licenses also available for Citavi for Windows
In Citavi Account you can remove a Citavi for Windows license from a user at your organization and assign it to another person. This makes license management after a personnel change easier.
For system administrators: manual creation of organizational settings files
In Citavi 6 you can use the MSI Assistant to configure all essential settings. These settings are written to the registry.
Placeholders
In previous Citavi versions you could use placeholders to insert references into any Word processor that could save documents in Rich Text Format. The placeholders were in the the format {Name Year #Sequence number Page range}. When you finished writing your paper, you could use Citavi to convert the placeholders to citations formatted according to the citation style.
This process no longer exists in Citavi 6. Instead, you can create publications with Microsoft Word or a TeX editor. If you would like to be notified as soon as an add-in is available for LibreOffice, please add your email address to this mailing list.
Were you previously using placeholders to create your publications?
If you previously used the Citavi Publication Assistant to insert placeholders in LibreOffice or OpenOffice (see the Citavi 5 manual) do not install the upgrade to Citavi 6! Citavi 6.0 does not support placeholders, and there is no add-in for LibreOffice that works similarly to the Citavi Word Add-In.
If you are using Citavi's Publication Assistant to insert placeholders in Microsoft Word, convert your placeholders to fields with Citavi 5 (see the Citavi 5 manual). After that, install the upgrade to Citavi 6.
Sequence numbers
In all previous versions of Citavi, a unique sequence number was automatically assigned to each reference in Citavi. Now that the placeholder method has been removed, the sequence numbers are no longer necessary and have also been removed. If you were using sequence numbers for another purpose (for example, to help you find attachments or organize your books), you can import the sequence numbers from your Citavi 5 projects into a Custom field in Citavi 6.
Attached folders
In previous versions of Citavi you could attach folders to a reference in addition to files. For technical reasons, this feature had to be removed from Citavi 6. If you were using this feature, re-attach all files in folders as individual files before upgrading to Citavi 6.
Book orders from within Citavi
In previous Citavi versions, you could create an email to send to your local bookstore. It was also possible to place an online order in an online bookseller. These features had to be removed.
Sending a reference by email
In previous Citavi versions, you could create an email containing the current reference and its attached files. This feature has been replaced by an Outlook add-on.
Installation on a USB flash drive
In previous Citavi versions, you could install Citavi on a USB flash drive by starting the installation from within Citavi. This option is no longer available in Citavi 6. You can still save Citavi projects on a USB flash drive and work with them there.
However, if you want to work on multiple computers, we recommend saving projects in the Citavi Cloud instead.
Direct support for barcode scanners
In previous Citavi versions you could directly import from three cableless ISBN barcode scanners. These scanners are no longer supported in Citavi 6. We recommend using a barcode app for your Smartphone or a USB barcode scanner and saving results to your computer.

Export to OpenOffice Calc
Previous Citavi versions could export bibliographic information in OpenOffice Calc format. In Citavi 6 it's only possible to export a table of bibligoraphic information in XLS format. OpenOffice and LibreOffice can also open the XLS format.
Import from Access databases
Since there is no 64-bit driver for Access, Citavi cannot work with Access databases on a 64-bit computer. The import feature was removed for this reason. As a workaround you can export information in .xls or .csv format and then import it with the option File containing tabular data.
The Formula Editor
Previous versions had a simple editor for writing formulas in knowledge items. This editor is no longer available in Citavi 6.
New demo project
Citavi 6 includes a new example project on food fraud.
